PROPOSALS TO REMEMBER
Ideas for Everybody
By Lynnette R. Daughtry
Finally, you found the perfect ring. It sparkles and shines and surely will be just what you need to put a smile on your girlfriend’s face. And while a beautiful ring is an excellent start, if it doesn’t come along with an exquisite proposal there will be little to smile about.
Proposing marriage can be one of the most memorable times of your life. It can also be the most nerve-racking and stomach-clenching. Even if the proposal is not the most important thing to you, you can bet it’s important to her.
Many women dream of being proposed to in a way that is unforgettable and romantic. You definitely don’t want to toss the ring in her lap and say, “So are you going to marry me or what?” A poorly planned proposal simply will not do!
So what is the right way to propose?
From surprises to flowers, there is a perfect proposal out there for you. Proposing is about finding a proposal that fits your style and hers. Here are 10 creative proposal ideas.
-
A jigsaw puzzle
Have a special jigsaw puzzle made where the piece(s) in the middle spell out the words: “Will you marry me?” Ask your prospective fiancée to help you put the puzzle together. Have the last and most important piece safely hidden in your pocket. Just when the puzzle is almost complete, pull it out of your pocket and stand back. Watch her amazement as she finally “puts the pieces together.”
-
It’s been a pleasure to serve you!
Prepare a dinner party for you and your girlfriend at your home. Serve the courses to her one by one on silver platters. On the last platter, have the ring sitting in the middle. She’ll never forget the “karats” you serve her that night.
-
Read it and weep!
Take out a full-page ad in a newspaper you know your loved one reads regularly and be close by when she reads it.
-
A treasure hunt
Write up clues that will take her all over the city. Make sure the clues are plain and easy to understand. Have the last clue lead her to a place that is special to the two of you. Be there waiting for her on bended knee.
-
I’m ready for my close-up!
Have a local videographer film a message from you to your girlfriend. Start the video with her favorite song and then show you telling your girlfriend how much you love her and how much she means to you. The video ends with your proposal. When the video turns off, she’ll find you already on one knee, holding the ring.
-
Let’s go to the movies
Contact your local movie theater to get the cost to advertise before a film is shown. Take your girlfriend to the movies and wait for your marriage proposal advertisement to appear. This one can be tricky, though—make sure she doesn’t get up to go the concession stand before the film starts.
-
The future looks bright!
Contact a local fortune cookie company and have a special cookie made up that asks your girlfriend to marry you. Have her choose the cookie after a meal of carry-out Chinese food.
-
Blessings come in three’s
Give your girlfriend three roses. Tell her that one represents the past, one represents the present and the last represents the future. Have the ring attached to the last rose by a string.
-
Stop and smell the roses
After a night out on the town, take her home and have her follow a path of her favorite colored roses around her house that ends at a small box containing the engagement ring and a hand written card that asks her to marry you.
-
Valentine’s Day
Although Valentine’s Day proposals are often seen as trite and common, they can still be romantic. However, to put a little twist on a slightly overused tactic, try proposing on February13th. Preface your proposal by saying, “Even though it’s not Valentine’s Day yet, I thought I’d do this today because you are just too special to have to wait an extra day.”
